We offer comprehensive professional development and training for our instructors throughout the year. Instructors have access to a variety of communities within Cisco where they interact directly and share insights with product teams and peer experts. Cisco vowed to continue investing in education and IT skills to shrink the digital divide. Last year, Cisco further expanded Networking Academy by introducing a free program called Skills for All, which offers self-paced courses, interactive tools, and career resources designed by industry experts. Skills for All tailors every learner’s experience to their unique career goals and interests. Anyone with an internet-connected mobile phone can tap into the program’s adaptive learning technology, videos and built-in gamification. Cisco Networking Academy is an IT skills and career building program for learning institutions and individuals worldwide.
It began as an act of community
Participating in a Dream Team project means that you are invited to join a specific team, for a specific event and time-period. To participate in multiple Dream Team projects, one must be invited for each opportunity. Networking Academy also rolled out a new IoT Security course that allows students to see through the lens of a cyberattacker.
The Networking Academy program offers a pathway to meaningful employment for women where otherwise their options are limited. Skills for All with Cisco Networking Academy is one of our recent innovations to address this issue. Skills for All is a free, ‘mobile-first’ learning platform, that scales access to education for anyone with access to a smartphone. As part of Cisco’s purpose to power an inclusive future for all, Cisco Networking Academy strives to broaden web accessibility. Our design vision is that all students should be able to access all web content, and we continue to make enhancements across Skills for All that align with the standards of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
The Networking Academy is in 49 percent of the community colleges in the United States. Well, many people that go to community colleges are from very diverse backgrounds. Some are unemployed, some even have felony records, others simply aren’t sure what they want to do with their lives. But they go to community colleges and take our courses and see that they, too, can become IT or cybersecurity professionals.
A top priority for Cisco is to empower people everywhere through opportunity. More specifically, we want to transform the lives of learners, educators, and communities through education and career possibilities. Based on a growing skills gap globally and the fact that every kind of business in today’s economy requires digital skills, this priority couldn’t be timelier. Through Cisco Networking Academy, we’re providing global and inclusive access for anyone, anywhere to participate in the evolving digital landscape. The program is available to those as young as 13 years old, those pursuing higher education and college, and those seeking a new career path. It’s delivered through public and private partnerships—so learners and educators keep up and keep moving forward.
Today, 38 percent of our students in the U.S. identify as underrepresented minorities, 20 percent black, 17 percent Latino, and 1 percent Native American. Clearly, we must go a lot further, but we are demonstrating that our reach is vast, and our reach is deep. This cybersecurity skills gap is huge, with more than 700,000 unfilled jobs in the U.S. We really need to ensure that we continue to ramp up in filling those jobs and have a stronger cybersecurity workforce to protect our nation and our world.
Career-focused for learners
Established in 2014, the program has reached a global audience of over 2 million people, featuring 156 female speakers, 91 live TV broadcasts, and 78 blogs. As a result, more than 974,000 people have enrolled in a Cisco Networking Academy course. Attendees will hear directly from a panel of cybersecurity professionals, who will share insights into the latest trends and skills needed to fill the current demand for cybersecurity talent. Today, she is a cybersecurity intern preparing for a long-term career in the industry. The learning portfolio’s hands-on design and resources from Talent Bridge help prepare students for jobs. Our course portfolio is focused on networking, cybersecurity, and programmable infrastructure with an emphasis on student engagement. We have made improvements to our simulation software, Packet Tracer, by removing its dependence on Java and supporting Mac users directly.
At launch, Skills for All will offer a learning pathway featuring cybersecurity to prepare learners for jobs in this vitally important and job-rich industry. Soon, we will follow-up with courses about cloud infrastructure and automation with even more content to follow. Best of all, our curriculum is vendor agnostic so learners can get jobs with any company.
